Our sales, work quality, advertising, and (these days) visibility on the internet and in social media.</p>
<p>All too frequently, we tend to be reactive when we perceive the competition surging out in front in any way.</p>
<blockquote><p><strong><em>A competitor redesigns their website. How do you respond? A competitor launches a Facebook fan page. How do you respond?</em></strong></p></blockquote>
<p>Today, I challenge you to measure your social media acumen against that cutting edge institution, <strong><a title="The Vatican" href="http://www.vatican.va/phome_en.htm" target="_blank">The Vatican.</a></strong></p>
<p>It started with the <strong><a title="Vatican Channel" href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=search_users&amp;search_query=vatican+channel&amp;uni=1" target="_blank">Vatican Channel on </a><a title="Vatican Channel" href="http://www.youtube.com/results?search_type=search_users&amp;search_query=vatican+channel&amp;uni=1" target="_blank">YouTube</a></strong>. It grew with <strong><a title="Vatican on Facebook" href="http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=25509717198&amp;ref=search&amp;sid=1294586535.125664214..1" target="_blank">Facebook Fan Page</a>, <a title="Vatican Radio" href="http://www.radiovaticana.org" target="_blank">Vatican Radio</a></strong><strong>,</strong> and <strong>iPhone applications</strong>. Now, the Pope has directed Catholic clergy  to address the masses through blogging and social media.</p>
<p><strong>Pope Benedict XVI</strong> sent a message to priests explaining the challenges in <span style="color: #000000;">communication</span> resulting from a shift toward online means of conversation. The Pontiff urged priests to spread the Gospel by blogging and by taking advantage of the many multimedia sharing options available now.</p>
<p>In his message, the Pope called on priests to harness technology to evangelize and to teach. He said,</p>
<blockquote><p><strong><em>“Priests are thus challenged to proclaim the Gospel by employing the latest generation of audiovisual resources (images, videos, animated features, blogs, websites) which, alongside traditional means, can open up broad </em></strong><span style="color: #000000;"><strong><em>new vistas</em></strong></span><strong><em> for dialogue, evangelization and catechesis.”</em></strong></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>The Vatican</strong> has developed a social networking hub at <a href="http://pope2you.net/" target="_blank"><strong>Pope2You</strong></a><strong>, </strong>consolidating the various social media destinations, such as <strong>Facebook, iPhone, and YouTub</strong>e options in a single spot.</p>
<p>Now that <strong>The Vatican,</strong> an institution which operates on ancient traditions, has leapfrogged the pack, ask yourself this question: <strong><em>Are you blogging? Are you blogging effectively. Are you just ON Facebook and Twitter, or do you really have an effective social media strategy?</em></strong></p>

<p><strong>Ricky Gulati</strong> of <strong><a title="Memory Lane Video" href="http://www.mlvnv.com/" target="_blank">Memory Lane Video</a></strong>, makes a decided effort to network heavily. He is active at two <strong><a title="Las Vegas Wedding Network" href="http://www.lasvegasweddingnetwork.org" target="_blank">Las Vegas wedding networking groups</a></strong> and the <strong><a title="Las Vegas NACE" href="http://www.lasvegasnace.net" target="_blank">Las Vegas Chapter of NACE.</a></strong></p>
<p>Recently, he&#8217;s added a new tactic to his strategic arsenal. <strong>Coffee With Ricky</strong>, a video podcast. He hasn&#8217;t set in stone a schedule for the podcast series, but it&#8217;s a good bet it will eventually be a monthly offering, if it&#8217;s to be effective.</p>
<p>His audience is both brides and the local wedding professional. His intent is to provide good information and position himself as a wedding industry expert; particularly in the Las Vegas market.</p>
<p>The guest in this episode is <strong>Debbie Hansen, Producer of <a title="Bridal Spectacular" href="http://www.bridalspectacular.com" target="_blank">Bridal Spectacular</a></strong>, a Las Vegas &#8211; based wedding trade show for almost two decades. While it will take Ricky a few episodes to reach his comfort zone as host, he is well prepared with all the right questions the viewer would want asked. The result is an effective promotional tool for both interviewer and interviewee.</p>
<p><strong>The questions you should be asking are:</strong></p>

<li>Could I produce an audio or video podcast myself?</li>
<li>Could I collaborate to produce an audio or video podcast?</li>
<li>If not as a producer, <strong>am I prepared to be a guest on someone else&#8217;s show?</strong> (Locally, regionally, or nationally)</li>
</ul>
<p>Credibility and authority in the wedding industry  is important. This is a great example of it.</p>
